Earthy, chocolatey, and low in caffeine, I love houjicha lattes as an alternative to coffee and regular matcha— here’s how I make mine at home:

* you will need a kitchen scale!
What Houjicha Should I Use?
Right now, my favorite brands are Kettl ($30 USD for 100g)(which is also the brand we use at work) and Rocky’s Matcha ($22 USD for 30g)(way less bang for your buck, but it’s sold at a shop near my house, so it’s good in a pinch).
Hot Houjicha Latte:
4 grams Houjicha Powder (I use anywhere from 3 to 4 grams, but I usually opt for 4)
20 grams maple syrup (brown sugar or honey works too, but I prefer maple syrup)
Califia Farms Oat Milk (any milk you like is fine)
1. Heat up a mug of hot water and leave your matcha whisk to soak in the water for a minute
— while preparing the houjicha, heat up your milk on the stove
2. Add 4 grams of houjicha powder to a bowl, then add a splash of water from the mug the whisk is soaking in
3. Whisk houjicha powder into a paste, then add a little more water
4. Whisk into a very thin/liquidy paste, then add your maple syrup
5. Whisk the houjicha and maple continuously until frothy (side to side motions), about a minute
6. Pour your houjicha into a clean mug, and then add your milk
— Enjoy!
Iced Houjicha Latte
Repeat steps 1-5 from the Hot Houjicha Latte recipe
Fill a glass with ice and as much milk as you like, then pour your houjicha into the glass
— Enjoy!
i love houjicha and no one ever talks about it!! i usually just get it when i see it on a cafe menu, so im excited to check out those brands and make it at home!
